Healthy Choices (Mental)

For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?

(Matthew 16:26)

There is a saying, "The mind is a terrible thing to waste." This is a complete saying only at the layer of the conscious mind. At the other levels of the mind (the mind is not a singularly defined place), those levels that are not generally included in common references to the mind (though, these are still parts of the mind); the mind is never wasted.

Besides being the factory for the production of expressed logic and reasoning, the mind is, too, the driving force behind the third of three kinds of activities of the human body: the first being the involuntary activities, the second being the autonomic activities, and the third being the voluntary behaviors. The other two receive some participation from the brain, but the brain and the mind are not the same processes of life. It may be better to think of the brain and the mind as being coexistent in a symbiotic relationship with one another. Let us look at an example of the interaction of the brain and the mind in regulating our behaviors.

In general, when a smile is in production, it goes through several stations of the voluntary expression assembly line of the factory of the mind. Among the things that the mind packages into a smile, are the following:

* cultural limitations
* familiarity with the targeted recipient
* sincerity or manipulation, or some other intent
* the anticipated or feared impact from the surrounding environment of both the source and the target, as in, who else is watching

For instance, if one is a man, one does not want to package a smile for the wife of a belligerent husband, in the sight of the husband, when the couple is in the midst of a feud. This is generally true even if the wife happens to be the sister of the man with the potential to smile.

Let us consider another example. The same sorts of considerations that apply to a smile are true of a kiss. However, with a kiss, there are several other considerations; mental things that we must add to the package before delivery. Some of these inclusions are even of an autonomic nature. For instance, the body has a yearning for satisfaction; thus, if an opportunity arises (within the limitations of moral values) for the receipt of a kiss, there is an almost instinctive reaction. Of course, in most cases, our min limits our outreach to the inclusion of only those kiss sources that we should accept as being the right ones from which to receive the kiss. Such a, right ones situation, would be active for a kiss from a toddler, placed on the cheek of the mother or the father. Those kisses, though, are the more benign kisses: a kiss can span a far great distance of mental considerations. For, in the case of a kiss, there is a very detailed assembly process. The increased detail is necessary because a kiss can be as sweet as the kiss of the toddler, or it can be as sinister as the “kiss of death” that we may have heard about.

The smile and the kiss are only two of the behaviors in which the mind participates. There are many other activities of the mind that affect the quality of our life; including activities that are short-term (including instant-term), and long-term (including to the end of our life).

With the fact of the constant activities of the mind, it behooves us to spend some time concentrating on the architecture of the layer of consciousness, at a minimum. Moreover, it behooves us to take some time to understand the layer of our subconscious behaviors, if we have a tolerance for that layer of detail about our self.

The resources below may be useful in both giving you the awareness of these layers, and in helping you build strength and purpose into them. This is similar to building the strong bones and teeth of a happy child; and, in the area of the mind, we are all still children, building the strong bones of our beliefs, and the teeth of our public attitudes. This strength can enhance the quality of our life; and maybe, even, of the lives of those we love. Thus, it is worthy of our choice time, and effort.

Honoring Civic responsibility

“Everybody can be great…because anybody can serve.”---Martin Luther King, Jr.

Tell us therefore, What thinkest thou? Is it lawful to give tribute unto Caesar, or not?

But Jesus perceived their wickedness, and said, Why tempt ye me, ye hypocrites? Shew me the tribute money.

And they brought unto him a penny.

And he saith unto them, Whose is this image and superscription?

They say unto him, Caesar's.

Then saith he unto them, Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar's; and unto God the things that are God's.
